Sullivan’s Beach is in a secluded bay minutes from Paihia in the Bay of Islands. Sheltered from the wind and much of the ocean swell the beach is popular with swimmers and parents with young children. It is also one of the most peaceful local beaches with no roads directly accessing it.
Perched halfway up the lush, native bush slopes leading down to this delightful bay is the Bay of Islands Beach House. It has two very reasonably priced luxury apartments that offer both seclusion and magnificent views of the Bay of Islands. Owners, Theo and Sopha Diepeveen also run two other properties locally but the apartments are my favourite. They can house either two or four people, children are welcome and have fully equipped kitchens; fantastic news if you’re planning a longer stay and don’t wish to traipse into Paihia every time you fancy a bite to eat.
What better way to spend a summer holiday; swimming, even tramping – if you’re up for it in the summer heat there are some splendid walks around the bay – and the fishing is unbelievable; you’ll be using the kitchens all the time when you bring back some fresh kingies or snapper! I can’t think of many better places to spend a perfect Kiwi summer.
