The State Highway 1 drive from Kaikoura dips and dives and threads and weaves among stunning wild coastline and breathtaking countryside as you approach Christchurch. All up the drive should take you around 2.5 hours, and is best taken during the drier months.
There are some stunning photo opportunities along the way, but there are not always safe areas to stop, so please exercise caution.
Take a break at Cheviot which is pretty much at your half-way point. This lovely rural town is a great place to stretch your legs and have a cuppa or bite to eat. There's even a local museum you can browse, and learn more about the history of the area.
