For fabulous Ski conditions in the heart of Canterbury, head to Mt Hutt in Methven. The instructor programs provide New Zealand's highest quality training courses for aspiring ski and snowboarding.
About 40 minutes drive from Methven, Arrowsmith Lodge sits on the shores of breathtaking Lake Heron and is the perfect base for your Mt Hutt skiing getaway.
Arrowsmith Lodge is renovated sheep shearers’ quarters at the heart of the Mount Arrowsmith Station – one of Canterbury’s earliest high country stations still populated with merino sheep and Angus cattle – and is comfortable and roomy enough for up to twelve guests, with the best rooms offering incredible views out across the lake. Heli skiing trips can be organised locally though you’ll need to hire a decent 4WD truck with chains if you’re hoping to drive into the mountains yourself.
That said, there’s plenty to do near the lodge even if the snow’s not up to much. In fact, summer can be equally good, with great fishing and kayaking on offer, one of the best chances of seeing some of New Zealand’s rarest birdlife and regular guided tours to the most spectacular locations used in Peter Jackson’s second Lord of the Rings films.
Be it winter skiing or summer sports - whatever tickles your fancy - Mt Hutt and Methven is a fantastic spot to begin your adventures.
