Located in the centre of the South Island, inland from Dunedin, Central Otago comprises a series of river basins and deep river gorges. Central Otago is the only region in New Zealand to experience a near continental climate, having the hottest summers and coldest winters in New Zealand.
Otago has a nice old-fashioned feel to the people and landscape. Dunedin is part of central Otago. You can browse plenty of historic buildings, take a tour of the Cadbury factory and then drive to Wanaka to experience Southern natural beauty with views of bright amber trees set amongst lakes and mountains.
The Taieri Gorge Railway is one of the best ways to see Otago with plenty of photo opportunities on the platforms and at the train stops on the way.
Be sure to visit Port Chalmers in the Otago Harbour, which is, quite frankly, just charming.
Queenstown is the place to go if you're mad on sports and adventure. Awesome in the winter time for skiing, but lovely all year round. Try a bungy jump or two!
Have a fantastic time seeing the sights of the Otago area, and be sure to use Yellow Maps™ to plan your journey. You can even book accommodation right now!
